This section covers:

Approaches for visually representing avatars

Methods of encouraging and discouraging certain behaviours

What’s changed

When multiple users begin sharing an experience together within one VR environment, many aspects of design considerations change and new challenges and constraints arise.

The following example demonstrates how teleportation, although an intuitive and convenient method of locomotion, it fails to consider the experience for third-person users in a social context; imagine trying to follow another avatar in a VR environment when they are teleporting around you, with no clear indication of intent, direction, or velocity.

Considerations

When designing for social contexts, consider the following:

  • How will avatars and their actions appear to each other?
  • What can be implemented to encourage social behaviours, goals, or communication?
  • How should users be constrained or discouraged from performing any unwanted behaviours like cheating, trolling, or harassing?
