Materials, Lighting, and Texture

Objects and environments in the real world rarely has completely flat colours and so the same should be considered for VR environments. Textures, materials, and shadows give users a sense of scale and distance.

As demonstrated in Manuel Clement’s experiment, even in his scene where objects are all simple with flat colored materials, the lights, shadows, and noise texture is still able to convey the 3-dimensional aspects of the scene. Simple movements of the detailed noise on the conveyer belt can even convey movement as well.

Spacial Sound

Proper usage of spacial sounds can greatly impact a user’s immersion within an environment. When designing environmental sound, consider the following:

  • Where are the sources of sound within your environment?
  • What are the ambient sounds of the scene?
  • How will the ambient sounds change as a user move closer, farther, or through the scene? Should it change?
